As people start looking at replacing their fading annuals in beds and planters we often get questions about mums and if they will come back next year. The blooming garden mums that fill our greenhouse right now are beautiful and will last for many weeks especially if the buds are just opening. They will also stand frost without fading. Mums are a great way to add color during these cooler months, but generally they will not return next year.
If you are looking for a perennial version we have you covered! Thanks to the fabulous mum breeding program at the U of M, you can have true perennial mums in Minnesota with Mammoth™ Mums. Varieties like Yellow Quill, Red Daisy and Bronze Daisy and Lavender Daisy can add big color to your fall garden year after year. These mums are know for their large size and crazy number of blooms. As plants mature they can be about 3-4′ wide filled with 100s of flowers so plant to give them room to grow. Yes, you read that correctly, 3-4 feet, so give them some room!
The University of Minnesota mum breeding program is one of the oldest breeding programs in the world starting back in the 1920s. It wasn’t until the 1990s when researchers came across the seedlings that were to become the Mammoth™ Mums we now enjoy in our landscapes reliably blooming year after year.
