The 2017 Perennial Plant of the Year is one of my favorites –  Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa). No joke, this plant is a butterfly magnet!.  The flowers are a nectar source for many butterflies and leaves are a food source for the monarch butterfly caterpillars too.

Location Butterfly weed does best in full sun and can tolerate dry soils.  Once established it is very drought tolerant too.

Pests No notable disease or insect problems for this plant and it is deer resistant.

Uses Attracts butterflies like crazy of course but also makes a great long lasting cut flower.  Just make sure buds are at least half open before cutting since they won’t open once cut.

Tip Deadhead to prevent reseeding if desired and to promote additional blooms.
