Julie and Marge’s grandfather, Forrest H. Sargent, founded Sargent’s Nursery in 1928.

Max Sargent, Forrest’s son took over the business after World War II.  When Lloyd Peterson married Julie and Bob Lewis married Marge they both found they married into the business.

Bob began working with Sargent’s in 1973 and Lloyd joined the working family in 1980.  Bob currently is President and General Manager of the corporation with other responsibilities in the areas of production and promotion.  Marge is Secretary of the corporation, bookkeeper and also works seasonally in the production greenhouse.  Lloyd and Julie are corporate Vice-Presidents.  Julie’s expertise lies in Landscape Design and Lloyd oversees our Landscaping Department.  Together they have been working as a successful team for more than 20 years.

Assistant Garden Center Manager
Certified Nursery Professional

I graduated from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and started as the Assistant Manager of the Garden Center at Sargent's in the spring of 2004. My role at Sargent's involves creating displays, training employees on products and services and assisting customers. Answering tricky horticulture questions and assisting in the creation of a garden is my ideal day!

I really enjoy being able to work on garden projects, installing and maintaining landscapes. During college I helped to reconstruct the perennial plots to make the plots more educational friendly. I also worked two summers on the Sargent's landscaping crew and did my college internship working to maintain a display garden. I love to tinker around at home adding more to the gardens and attempting to keep the gardens weed free.

I am originally from Goodhue, but now live in Menomonie, WI with my husband, Karl.

Anne Matzek

Landscape Designer, Crew Leader, and Webmaster

My name is Anne Matzek. I work in the landscape department doing design, computer drafting of landscape designs and also lead the garden care crew. The maintenance we do involves trimming, weeding, spring annual planting, and fall garden clean-up. It's a true joy to turn an un-cared for garden into a masterpiece.

I am the daughter of Lloyd and Julie Peterson. I would be considered a fourth generation Sargent. I initially learned to love the nursery industry while hanging out at my grandparent's home, on the adjacent property. My grandmother, Carol Sargent, put me to work in her gardens and I'd sneak over to the nursery to get in on the action as I grew older. I worked here over my summers in high school and college. After college I pursued a career in graphic design for two years, which I value greatly and still utilize at Sargent's. In March 2005 I returned to continue my passion for gardening and the family business.

I live near Diamond Bluff, WI with my husband Jared and my two children, Noah and Reese. I enjoy painting, sewing, family time and gardening during my spare time.

Landscape Designer
Certified Nursery Professional

Hi, I’ve been apart of the Landscape Department at Sargent’s Nursery since the Spring of 2001 as a Landscape Designer.  In high school I took a Landscape class and that was all it took to hook me.  I chose to further my education at the Dakota County Technical College and earned a degree in Landscape/Horticulture focusing on design.

I live in Cannon Falls with my wife Nicole. In addition to my career in landscaping I also have a love for skiing and snowmobiling, baseball, fishing, camping and of course, gardening.

Sargent’s Nursery has helped me broaden my skills in Landscape Design and I continually learn something new everyday by working with this extremely knowledgeable staff- not to mention the wide variety of work that we do.  All this makes Sargent’s a great place for me to work.

ng, sewing, family time and gardening during my spare time.

Nancy Murphy

Sales Clerk
Since 1999

Hi my name is Nancy and you will often see me helping customers at Sargent’s Nursery. I really find the work here to be great since Sargent’s is a seasonal type of business I have slower winters so that I can visit my children and in the summers when it is busy, I get to work while the weather is great.

I am married and have three grown children.  I lived in Welch for over twenty years, but now reside in Ellsworth, WI.  I grew up in Red Wing and have spent most of my life in the area with the exception of 10 years on the East and West coasts while my husband was in the Navy.  My past experience has been in retail in Red Wing.  I studied at the University of Minnesota and received my business degree.  I was also lucky enough to work with the University system but didn't find the commute desirable.

That’s when I found Sargent’s Nursery.  Here I enjoy the work and I get involved with planting of perennials in the spring and working in the retail garden center the rest of the year.  My job is a never-ending learning experience.

Gene and his wife Dorothy live in Red Wing. They spend the winters in Florida, but Gene always comes back each spring/summer to help out as needed and "get his hands dirty" once again! Gene and Dorothy have two daughters, Cheryl and Lisa.

Lisa Jacobson

Annual Grower
Since 1997

Hi, I’m Lisa Jacobson, assistant to Sargent’s expert grower, Bob Lewis.  My job provides me with lots of facets, which I love. I supervise and work alongside our spring transplant crew, potting annual flowers and vegetables.  Once our plants are grown my main focus it to keep our retail greenhouse fully stocked so that you can find exactly what you are looking for when you need it.  Although I am not technically a Garden Center employee you will often find me assisting customers with their plant choices.

My gardening education has been informal.  I learned a lot from my mother and from Bob and Dave Lewis.  I also pride myself on reading a lot about plants and gardens.  And of course by just doing my job…gardening is just common sense.

Sargent’s is a great place to work and learn.  The people here are friendly, fun and I’ve found a real dedication to quality and service!

Lisa lives in Red Wing.

Julie Bolin

Perennial Grower
Since 1999

I’m a "behind the scenes" employee at Sargent’s Nursery.  My name is Julie Bolin and I take care of all the perennials you purchase from Sargent’s.

I graduated from high school in New Ulm, MN.  I spent a year in college and then married my husband whom I’ve been married to for 42 years.  We have five children and eleven grandchildren.  Prior to my coming to Sargent’s I worked at the Red Wing Shoe Company for ten years and then I stayed on the farm and helped my husband farm.  When we made the decision to retire from milking I ventured out and began working at Sargent’s Nursery.

I take care of all the perennials and the best part is that I get to enjoy my hobby by working here.  I find working with plants to be extremely enjoyable…my favorite part is that plants don’t ever talk back!

Laurie Anderson

Office Assistant
Since 1997

Hi, I’m Laurie Anderson and I’ve been working for Sargent’s Nursery since 1997.  Most of that time has been spent in the landscaping division of the business.  I also plant in the greenhouse in the spring and work on outside maintenance jobs in the fall.

I have 4 years of college background and worked in nursing industry previous to coming to Sargent’s Nursery.  I enjoy gardening, sports activities and reading.

Working at Sargent’s Nursery has taught me a lot about the horticulture industry and landscape business.  I think what I like most about my experience at Sargent’s is the very friendly, fun people I work with and I very much enjoy coming to work.
