Residential Full Yard Entry Kleffman Residence
This is the home for a family of five and also serves as a bed and breakfast. The home was built new with the intention to replicate the old farmhouse, from the 1800’s, that stood in its place one year prior to construction. This farm consists of a Civil War era smokehouse, a 1914 historic round barn, an old mil house, and a new country manor home based on an 1861 architectural plan. The landscape was designed to be appropriate with these existing structures.
As requested by the client old limestone foundation blocks from the original farmhouse were used extensively in the design. The client’s intention for the plant material was to use what would have been planted in that era, such as old-fashioned lilacs, old spireas, and old standard hostas.
The main driveway leads up a winding slope and has a daylily garden combined with chunk limestone stepped into the hillside. On the other side of the driveway there is a traditional vegetable garden, surrounded by a picket fence that was also designed and installed by our company.
The parking area faces the home and is separated from planting areas by another picket fence and arbor. The clay brick walkways were designed to wind casually to the front door. The plant material was all designed to be very traditional and old-fashioned. Hostas, lilies, and a border of annuals create a splash of color against the calming green of the arborvitaes and softens the existing Honeylocust.
North of the house is a gazebo with a surrounding planting. Southeast of the house is a second arbor within a honeysuckle hedge and large chunk limestone steps that lead down the slope. Both of these locations frame a spectacular view of the fields stretching to the Mississippi River bluffs. These are the locations of choice for the many small weddings that have taken place there.
South of the house is a circular shaped brick patio that adjoins their clay brick bread oven, which is used daily to bake bread. Limestone walls border the patio.
In summary, the following items were designed and installed by our company: grading after new home construction, lawn seeding & sodding, all plantings and gardens shown on the design, limestone walls, clay brick patios & walkways, and all fences & arbors.
Both the bed and breakfast guests and the family pay many compliments to the finished design. All of their landscape needs have been fulfilled with great creativity.
